Why Acting Classes at the Music Theatre of Connecticut are so Special

Founded in 1987 by Artistic Director Kevin Connors and Managing Director Jim Schilling, the Music Theatre of Connecticut has been a cornerstone of performing arts in Fairfield County, offering both professional musical theatre productions and a comprehensive school of performing arts under one roof. If you are considering acting classes, we provide a unique environment for students to develop their passion and skills for the stage.

About The Music Theatre of Connecticut

Music Theatre of Connecticut is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Norwalk, CT. Our mission is to provide high-quality arts education and professional musical theatre. Our facility is a state-of-the-art center that includes a 110-seat Black Box Theatre, rehearsal halls, and scenic and costume shops.

MTC MainStage has received critical acclaim, earning over 30 Connecticut Critics’ Circle Awards. This includes the Tom Killen Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Connecticut Professional Theatre. This professional environment provides an inspiring backdrop for students, who learn and grow in the same spaces used by seasoned performers.

MTC's School of Performing Arts

The MTC School of Performing Arts offers a curriculum-based, conservatory-style training program for students from age four through high school. Our school is a certified member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts and was named the Best Performing Arts School by Westport Magazine. The programs focus on developing skills in all aspects of the performing arts, including:

  • Musical Theatre

  • Acting

  • Dance

  • Voice

  • TV and Commercial Technique

This structured training helps students build a solid foundation in theatre arts. Our school nurtures vital life skills such as self-confidence, collaboration, problem-solving, and mutual respect.

College Preparatory Program

For high school students aspiring to a career in the arts, MTC offers a nationally recognized College-Bound program. This pre-college program provides comprehensive training that includes private voice, acting, and dance instruction. It also offers counseling for the college selection process, audition strategy, and preparation. Alumni of this program have been accepted into leading college performance programs, and many have gone on to careers on Broadway, in regional theatre, and in film and television.

Summer Programs at MTC

At Music Theatre of Connecticut, we offer a variety of summer programs designed for different age groups and skill levels. These classes provide a focused, short-term opportunity for students to immerse themselves in theatre. Registration is now open for the summer sessions.

One-Week Workshops for Grades 2-8

These workshops offer both full-day and half-day options, with each week centered around learning and rehearsing an abridged version of a "Broadway Show-of-the-Week." Each workshop is limited to 20 actors to ensure individual attention.

  • Half-Day Option (9:30am - 12:30pm) - Students rehearse the show, culminating in a short performance at the end of the week.

  • Full-Day Option (9:30am - 3:00pm) - This includes the morning rehearsal plus two extra hours of theatre training. Afternoon sessions focus on skills like acting, singing, dancing, improvisation, and puppetry.

Parents are asked to send an audition video after registering so roles can be assigned in advance. This allows rehearsal time to be used efficiently.

Two-Week Summer Production for Grades 6-12

This intensive program allows students to rehearse and perform a full-scale, 1.5-hour version of a musical.

  • Half-Day Option (9:30am - 12:30pm) - Focuses entirely on rehearsing the production.

  • Full-Day Option (9:30am - 3:00pm) - Includes morning rehearsals followed by afternoon Master Classes. These classes cover topics such as audition prep, acting and singing technique, and improvisation.

This two-week session culminates in public performances, giving students the full experience of being part of a production from start to finish.
