Marvin and Me: a Tribute to Marvin Hamlisch
MTC is proud to present a one-of-a-kind tribute evening to one of America’s most renown musical theatre, pop music and film composers – Marvin Hamlisch. He was one of only 12 people to win the “EGOT” – the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony – and one of only two people to have won the EGOT as well as a Pulitzer Prize. His stage work includes the score for A CHORUS LINE, THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG, SMILE and THE GOODBYE GIRL. In the music world, his early hits included “Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows” (written at age 21), and California Nights (Lesley Gore). He went on to write mega-hits such as “The Way We Were” (song and score – 2 Academy Awards), the adaptation score for “The Sting” (Academy Award), “Nobody Does It Better” (theme song for THE SPY WHO LOVED ME), and film scores for “Sophie’s Choice”, “Ordinary People”, “The Informant” and “Behind The Candelabra”.
He was also the musical director and arranger for Barbra Streisand’s 1994 concert tour of the US and England, as well as the television special, “Barbra Streisand, The Concert” for shich he received two of this Emmys.
Marvin Hamlisch died suddenly on August 6, 2012. Barbra Streisand said he had a “brilliantly quick mind, his generosity and delicious sense of humor that made him a delight to be around”. Aretha Franklin called him “classic and one of a kind – one of the all-time great arrangers and producers”.
MTC’s star-studded evening “A Tribute to Marvin Hamlisch” will be led by Valerie Lemon, Marvin’s signature singer for 12 years. For MTC’s event, she is expanding her one-woman show “Marvin and Me”, written specifically for her by Marvin Hamlisch. The special guest star for the evening will be Terri Blair Hamlisch, Marvin’s widow, sharing great stories and insight into Marvin’s career, life and their journey together. The show will feature film clips, personal stories, and mostly Marvin’s music performed by Ms. Lemon, 4 additional Broadway singers and a 16-voice children’s choir of MTC students and others from the community. “A Tribute to Marvin Hamlisch” will truly be an evening to remember.
